The purpose of the Accounting Scholarship is to encourage individuals to pursue a career in Accounting by enrolling in the program offered at NCC. This scholarship will be awarded annually to one incoming student and one current student in the Accounting program. Scholarship proceeds will be utilized for tuition, fees, and books and split between the fall and spring semesters.

Ag Processing, Inc. Scholarship

Ag Processing, Inc. (AGP) is a farmer-owned cooperative engaged in the procurement, processing, marketing, and transportation of grains and grain products with a soy processing operation in Sheldon. The scholarship is to encourage students to pursue careers in the agri-business industry. Either incoming or current students may apply. Proceeds will be split equally between two semesters of study and may be used for tuition, fees, or books.

AgriVision Equipment Group Scholarship

AgriVision Equipment Group is a full-service John Deere farm and consumer equipment dealer offering new and used farm equipment, tractors, combines, hay equipment, lawn mowers, skid steers and much more.  They have 17 locations to serve Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Missouri. Proceeds will be split between the fall and spring semester of the second year of the Diesel Technology program and can be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Alethea F. Stubbe Scholarship for Leaders

1 - $1,000 Scholarship Awarded 
The purpose of the Alethea F. Stubbe Scholarship for Leaders is to recognize students who possess the qualities that will prepare them for leadership roles today and into the future.  Alethea F. Stubbe began at Northwest Iowa Community College in 1991 as an instructor in the Administrative Secretarial program. Through her own leadership skills, she advanced to Vice-President of Administration and then Vice-President of Education and Learning Services.  In 2011, Stubbe became the President of Northwest Iowa Community College, and remained in that role through 2021.  During her time as President, she enhanced the college in many ways, from program offerings to facilities to technology.  She oversaw multiple construction projects, including construction of multiple housing complexes, the extensive renovations to Building D and healthcare facility upgrades. She continually evaluated and improved program offerings, most notably in our healthcare and transportation departments, and also encouraged continual growth in online course offerings. Stubbe established NCC’s first athletic team, the NCC Thunder Sports Shooting Team which began in 2019. Additionally, NCC was able to pass the General Obligation Bond in 2018 and received many national awards and accolades under Stubbe’s leadership.

Alliant Energy Scholarship

Alliant Energy Corporation is a regulated, investor-owned public utility holding company providing regulated electric and natural gas service to approximately 1 million electric and 420,000 natural gas customers in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Alpha Evenson Memorial Nursing Scholarship

The Alpha Evenson Memorial Nursing Scholarships were created to support students who have successfully completed the Practical Nursing program and will be enrolling in the Associate Degree Nursing program. Associated General Contractors of Iowa Heavy Equipment Scholarship

The Associated General Contractors of Iowa Heavy Equipment Scholarship supports the achievements of a student enrolled in the NCC Heavy Equipment program. The scholarship will be awarded to an eligible student after the first fall semester is completed and will be applied to their spring semester. Proceeds will be used for tuition, fees, books, and equipment.

Automotive & Light Duty Diesel Scholarship

The Automotive and Light Duty Diesel Scholarship was established to help the future technicians achieve his or her career aspirations in the automotive industry. This scholarship was largely funded by the instructors in NCC's automotive programs. Proceeds will be split between the fall and spring semesters and can be used for tuition, fees, and books.

AWS Foundation Scholarship

Dollar amount and number of scholarships granted varies.
The AWS Foundation is dedicated to meeting the needs for education and research in the field of welding and related jointing technologies. District scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in a welding-related education or training program.

Beecin Foundation Scholarship

Beecin is a non-profit foundation receiving donations to assist Sanford Sheldon Home Health and Hospice financially. In turn, the Beecin Hospice Foundation provides services to clients undergoing care with limited financial resources. Scholarship proceeds will be utilized for tuition, fees, and books and will be split equally between semesters. One scholarship will be awarded for the fall and spring semester and one scholarship will be awarded for the spring semester and summer term. NCC President's Scholarship recipients will be excluded from consideration.

Bill Franey Memorial Powerline Scholarship

The Bill Franey Memorial Powerline Scholarship was established in memory of Bill Franey. Bill began his career with the Greene County REC which later became Midland Power Cooperative. He worked for the Cooperative for 30 years starting as an apprentice lineman, a journeyman/lineman, a foreman and for the last ten years of his career he served as line superintendent. He retired after 41 years with the Cooperative. The memorial has been established by Bill's wife, Shirley Franey. Scholarship proceeds will be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Bomgaars, Inc. Scholarship

Bomgaars, Inc. is a retail chain operating in 15 states with 180 stores and over 5,000 employees.  Bomgaars is making this scholarship available to encourage students to pursue post-secondary education.  Proceeds will be split equally between the fall and spring semesters and will be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Brad Georgius & Mitchell Hinners Memorial Powerline Scholarship

The Brad Georgius & Mitchell Hinners Memorial Powerline Scholarship was established by the Manilla, Iowa, City Council and employees of Manilla Municipal Utilities in memory of Brad Georgius and Mitchell Hinners. Brad was an employee of Manilla Utilities for ten years. Mitchell was an employee of Manilla Utilities for a year and was a 2009 graduate of the NCC Powerline program. Scholarship proceeds will be split between the recipient's fall and spring semesters and may be applied to tuition, fees, and/or books.

Business and Professional Women of Iowa Foundation Scholarship

The BPW/Iowa Foundation was established in 1988 for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. Since that time, the Educational Scholarship Committee has awarded numerous scholarships to deserving women and men in order to help them continue their higher education. The applicant does not need to be a member of Business and Professional Women of Iowa (BPW/IA).

Carl H. Rolf Scholarship for Leaders

Carl H. Rolf served as the sixth president of NCC from 1990 through 2002. Through his leadership, learning opportunities for students were enhanced. The Carl H. Rolf Scholarship for Leaders recognizes students who possess the qualities that will prepare them for leadership roles in the future. Applicants must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit both the personal statement and leadership short answer questions as part of the scholarship application. Proceeds will be applied to the spring semester of study and will be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Cleo Klein Memorial Scholarship

The Cleo Klein Memorial Scholarship was developed by George Klein in memory of his wife, Cleo. George and Cleo always had a passion to help others grow, regardless of their life circumstances. The Cody Fortune Memorial Powerline Scholarship was created in memory of Cody Fortune by his family and friends. Cody received his degree in Powerline Technology from NCC and worked for Alliant Energy as a lineman. Cody was compassionate, caring, fun loving, honest and hardworking. He was a second-generation lineman who had a great passion for the Powerline industry and found joy in all aspects of being a lineman. One $1,000 scholarship will be granted to a full-time student in the Powerline/Powerline Technology program. Funds will be used for tuition, fees and books.

Conquering Cancer 4 O'Brien County Scholarship

Consumers Energy Scholarship



Consumers Energy of Marshalltown, Iowa, has established this scholarship to assist students pursuing a post-secondary education in an electric utility lineworker program. A scholarship committee will evaluate all applications and personally interview the finalists in Marshalltown. Preference will be given to Consumer Energy members in Iowa.

Corn Belt Power Cooperative Scholarship

Committed to the communities it serves, Corn Belt Power Cooperative partners with NCC to offer scholarship opportunities to students who reside in a county served by a cooperative in the Corn Belt Power system. Corn Belt Power is interested in maintaining a skilled and educated workforce to serve its members well into the future. Recipients may be either first or second year students, but are eligible for only one scholarship. Each scholarship will be split equally between the first two semesters of enrollment after receiving the scholarship. Scholarship proceeds will be used for tuition, fees, and books.

The Denekas Electric Scholarship was established to support aspiring electricians as they begin their careers. Brian Denekas, owner and manager of Denekas Electric, is a proud Northwest Iowa native and graduate of the NCC Industrial & Commercial Wiring program. After gaining experience working with seasoned electricians, Brian launched his own business, Denekas Electric, in 2009. The company has grown steadily, specializing in a wide range of electrical projects, including new construction, remodeling, and agricultural and industrial work. This scholarship reflects Brian's commitment to helping the next generation of skilled electricians succeed. Dollars for Scholars



Number and amount of scholarships varies
NCC is a Collegiate Partner of Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America and the Dollars for Scholars family of community scholarship foundations. The student must have received a Dollars for Scholars award from their local Dollars for Scholars chapter. NCC will match that award up to $250 per recipient with a maximum of $3,000 for all matches per academic year. NCC has agreed that Dollars for Scholars awards will not adversely affect scholarship funding by NCC.





Dorothy McCormack Memorial Scholarship

The Dorothy McCormack Memorial Scholarship is given to honor the generosity of Dorothy McCormack.  Dorothy was a very passionate lady, who had many interests in her life, and always had a desire for helping those less fortunate.  This scholarship is given in hopes that the recipient is able to use the funds to help achieve his or her educational pursuits and have a fulfilling career. Proceeds from this scholarship will be evenly distributed between the Fall and Spring semesters and can be used for tuition, fees and books.  The scholarship can be awarded to a new or returning student.

Dr. Alethea Stubbe Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Alethea Stubbe Memorial Scholarship was created to celebrate the life of the first female President of Northwest Iowa Community College. Alethea dedicated her life to learning, furthering her own education while working for three decades at NCC. She began in 1991 as an Instructor in the Administrative Secretarial Program. She later held roles as Vice President of Administration and Vice President of Education and Learning Services before becoming President of NCC in 2011. She served the college in that capacity until she retired in 2021. Scholarship proceeds will be applied to tuition, fees and/or book charges, and will be split between the fall and spring semesters.

Edward Archer Memorial/MP&W Powerline Scholarship

The Edward Archer Memorial/MP&W Powerline Scholarship was established in memory of Ed Archer. Ed graduated from the Northwest Iowa Technical College Powerline Program in 1970. Throughout his 37-year career, he worked as a lineman, electric crew foreman, electric superintendent, and system operator. Ed worked at Muscatine Power and Water as a Lineman and a System Operator. This memorial has been established by Ed's wife, Kathy, and Muscatine Power and Water to promote the lineman trade and assist students preparing for a career in this field. The purpose of the Eilders Endowed Accounting Scholarship is to support the achievements of students enrolled in the Accounting program at NCC. This scholarship has been established by Delbert L. Eilders, who was the Accounting instructor at the College for 25 years. Applicants must have successfully completed one semester of the program. Scholarship proceeds will be utilized for tuition, fees, and books.

Elmer J. Steuck Memorial Scholarship

The Elmer J. Steuck Memorial Scholarship was established to support students who will be enrolled at NCC in the Heavy Equipment, Automotive or Diesel Technology programs. This scholarship was established by Lu Vella C. Burnett in memory of her brother, Elmer. Elmer farmed for over 60 years in the Primghar area and was a World War II Veteran and served as an Army nurse in a field hospital. Proceeds will be split equally between the fall and spring semester of study and will be utilized for tuition, fees, and books.

Emerging Leaders of Osceola County Scholarship

Scholarship could be renewed for a second year 
This scholarship has been established to encourage residents of Osceola County to pursue an education at NCC and to help finance the rising costs of post-secondary education. The future of local communities depends on today's students who will eventually fill various leadership positions within the communities in which they reside. This scholarship is designed to recognize those students who understand the importance of community involvement and leadership throughout life and it is designed to support a student who may not have the financial means necessary to afford a post-secondary education. We recognize that future leaders come from all backgrounds, skills and careers. Proceeds will be split equally between the fall and spring semesters and will be renewed for a second year, if applicable. Scholarship award funds can be utilized for tuition, fees or books.

The purpose of the Emma R. & Oscar Miller/Hegg Health Center Scholarship is to encourage individuals in the community college district to pursue a health science field at NCC. NCC President's Scholarship recipients will be excluded from consideration.

Eva D. Stubbe Memorial Scholarship

The Eva D. Stubbe Memorial Scholarship was created to celebrate the life of a longtime NCC employee and supporter. In the fall of 1967, Eva decided to further her education and attended night classes at the "new" community college (now known as NCC). It was a recommendation from her instructor that led to her hiring in January 1968 as a secretary in Adult Education and later in Administration. While working at NCC, she enrolled in various evening college courses to further her education. She continued working at NCC until she retired in July 1990. Proceeds will be applied to the following semester/s and will be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Faye Grave Memorial Nursing Scholarship

2 - $1,000 scholarships granted. Full-time students.
The purpose of the Faye Grave Memorial Nursing Scholarship is to remember the life of Faye Grave and to assist future nurses in obtaining a degree.  Faye devoted a majority of her life to the healthcare industry. She began as a Licensed Practical Nurse, or LPN, in the early 1970’s. She spent a majority of her career at Sibley Hospital (now known as Osceola Regional Health Center) where she retired after 40 years. Although Faye had the opportunity to further her education and become a Registered Nurse, she chose to remain a Licensed Practical Nurse as she felt she could make the most difference for her patients and develop deeper relationships with them as an LPN. She deeply loved her patients and was always willing to help others in need. Faye’s family would be pleased in knowing this scholarship made a difference in the life of an aspiring LPN.

Filiz and Kelsey Junge International Student Scholarship

The Filiz and Kelsey Junge International Student Scholarship was established to assist students who hold an F1 Visa and are not eligible for other forms of financial aid. Each year, NCC is home to a handful of international students who must provide proof of financial ability to pay for at least one year of education at NCC. These students are typically traveling to the United States alone, have limited options for financial support and are not allowed to work outside of school. Ford/AAA Auto Skills Scholarship



The purpose of the Ford/AAA Auto Skills Scholarship is to recognize the achievements of students from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota who are successful in the state Ford/AAA Auto Skills Competition prior to their enrollment in the Automotive program at NCC. The Ford/AAA Auto Skills Scholarship will be awarded to high school graduates who have participated at their state level and received a gold, silver, or bronze medal. In the case where the student has received multiple awards throughout his/her high school career, total scholarship will not exceed $500. Students must send a copy of their certificate with the scholarship application.

The Northwest Iowa Community College Foundation Scholarship was established to recognize academic excellence and personal achievement. Primary selection criteria is the applicant's high school academic record and the personal statement as part of the scholarship application. The scholarship is credited toward tuition, fees, and books. Proceeds will be split evenly between semesters during the first year of study. Scholarship proceeds must be utilized within 12 months of initial enrollment date (exceptions will be considered if necessary).

This scholarship was established by Frontier Bank who is a locally owned, community-minded independent bank. They are dedicated to serving individuals and businesses with the highest degree of care, confidentiality, and convenience starting in Rock Rapids in 1932.  Frontier Bank actively supports their home communities of Sioux Falls, SD, Rock Rapids, George, and Little Rock, IA. With their rich history in Lyon County, this scholarship was created to directly benefit residents of Lyon County who attend NCC. Frontier Bank recognizes that NCC is important to northwest Iowa and hopes this scholarship helps Lyon County students achieve their academic goals. The Gabe Jones Memorial Powerline Scholarship was established in loving memory of Gabe Jones by his friends and family. Gabe earned his Powerline diploma from Northwest Iowa Community College in 1998. His first job brought him back home to work at McDonough Power Cooperative in Macomb, IL, the same cooperative where his great-grandfather had worked many years before.
Throughout his career, Gabe worked as a journeyman lineman and supervisor across the United States. His experience ranged from local cooperative work to line construction and emergency repairs following hurricanes, forest fires, tornadoes, and floods. Always seeking adventure, he even repaired power lines while suspended from a helicopter. Gabe was deeply passionate about his work and quickly earned the respect of his colleagues. He was especially committed to safety, serving in various roles to promote industry best practices. Known for his dedication, hard work, honesty, and compassion, Gabe had a huge heart. After a courageous three-year battle with melanoma, his career was tragically cut short at the age of 46. It was his wish to give others the opportunity to work in the powerline industry and develop the same passion he had for the profession. Scholarship funds will be evenly distributed across the first two semesters and may be applied toward tuition, fees, and books.

The George & Cleo Klein Fund was developed by George and his wife Cleo after George successfully completed the high school equivalency series at the age of 74. Larry and Marcia Hoekstra, both community college graduates, are long-time supporters of Northwest Iowa Community College.  Larry has served on the NCC Board of Trustees since 2001.  During this time, he has been the President of the NCC Board of Trustees, and has served as the President of the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees.  He was also instrumental in the passing of the NCC General Obligation Bond in 2018 and has been pivotal in many ways the college has grown over the last two decades, including new program development, student population and campus upgrades.  Larry and his family are partners in the Golden Willow Stock Farm, LLP, and are excited to create this scholarship to assist NCC students in their academic pursuits. Proceeds from this scholarship will be evenly distributed between the Fall and Spring semesters and can be used for tuition, fees and books.  The scholarship can be awarded to a new or returning student.

The Gordon R. Jurrens Memorial Scholarship was established by the family of Gordon Jurrens to recognize the dedication of a student to succeed in any program at NCC. Gordon valued technical training because his professional life was built on technical skills. He started as a welder at Sudenga Industries, George, IA, in 1958 and worked his way up to shop foreman. In 1975, he became a partner in Sudenga Industries (now Diversified Technologies, Inc.) and remained an owner until 2001 when he retired. Gordon served on the NCC Foundation Board from 1990 to 1996. Scholarship proceeds will be applied to the spring semester and will be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Greg Brouwer Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in loving memory of Greg Brouwer, by his wife, Gladys, and son, Ethan.  Greg Brouwer graduated from Northwest Iowa Technical College (now NCC) in 1976 with his Powerline diploma.  He continued to advance his career by taking Electric Utility Supervisor and Powerline Construction and Design and Safety courses. 
During his forty-year career, he worked at Sanborn Municipal Light Plant, Milford Municipal Utilities, Cherokee County Electric Cooperative, Nebraska Public Power District, Interstate Power & Light, Alliant Energy and Power Contracting before retiring. Greg thrived on helping rebuild lines during the 1980 tornado in Grand Island, NE, the 1991 Halloween Blizzard in Minnesota and Iowa, the 1998 Comfrey-St. Peter, MN tornado. In 2012 he and fellow co-workers went to New York to rebuild powerlines after Hurricane Sandy destroyed electrical power across the Northeast United States. He also supervised the building of the wind towers between Britt and Garner, IA. He loved his career as a Journey Lineman and Supervisor, and his family hopes that this scholarship encourages future lineman to follow their passion in the industry.

John Bilsland, a native of Archer, Iowa, passed away in September 2016. Throughout his life, he demonstrated a deep passion for learning and education. After serving in the United States Army, he became a Spanish teacher, sharing his knowledge with students in high schools across Iowa. Upon retiring, Bilsland returned to Sheldon to be near his family, dedicating much of his time to studying ancient history and enjoying classical music.
Bilsland firmly believed in the power of education and lifelong learning. His generous gift was inspired by his desire to help others pursue higher education, regardless of their financial circumstances. A true gentleman and lifelong learner, he hoped this scholarship would provide opportunities for students to achieve their academic goals and build a brighter future. The award will be split between two semesters of enrollment and may be used for tuition, fees, and books.

She spent 30 years working as an attorney/lobbyist for a major financial corporation headquartered in Dallas, TX, lobbying state legislators across the nation and Congressmen in Washington D.C. After returning to Sheldon, she actively supported Northwest Iowa through her community service work, including the NCC Foundation Board. Judy now lives in Madison, WI near her family. The Ken Vande Brake Memorial Scholarship was established by Ken’s family and friends to pay tribute to a man who truly loved the world of manufacturing, especially welding.  In 1971, Ken began as a welding instructor at Northwest Iowa Technical College (now known as NCC).  After a few years, he shifted out of teaching and began working at manufacturers such as Maintainer in Sheldon and Link Mfg. in Sioux Center.  Even though Ken no longer taught at NCC, his heart was still with the college.  Ken served on the Board of Trustees for NCC for twelve years, and was very active in many career and technical advisory committees.  He would be thrilled that this scholarship is going to someone with a bright future in manufacturing.

She received her diploma in Administrative Secretarial and Bookkeeping and promptly began employment at Citizens State Bank after graduating in 1966. The purpose of the Mindy Wimmer Witham "Overcomer" Memorial Scholarship is to remember the life of Mindy Witham. Mindy grew up in Melvin and graduated from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School District. She attended NCC for Administrative Secretarial and upon graduating, began an 18-year career in the Admissions Office of the College. She considered her NCC co-workers her "second family" and had a special place in her heart for all things NCC. Mindy was a very caring individual who found great joy in being with and caring for her friends and family. Through Mindy's many personal hardships, she always continued to put others first and worked hard to "overcome" any challenge that came her way. Mindy passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in March 2016 and will be remembered for her strong will and desire to "overcome" whatever obstacle is put in front of her. Scholarship proceeds will be utilized for tuition, fees, and books for the Spring semester.

Missouri River Energy Services Scholarship

Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) has established a scholarship program to assist high school seniors with educational pursuits that are related to the electric industry. Up to seven (7) scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students who meet the following qualifications:

  • Must enroll in a full-time* Powerline/Lineworker Program at an eligible technical college.

Eligible technical colleges include the following:

  • Bismarck State College, Bismarck, N.D.
  • Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, Minn.
  • Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Granite Falls, Minn.
  • Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Jackson, Minn.
  • Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Wadena, Minn.
  • Mitchell Technical Institute-Mitchell, S.D
  • Northwest Iowa Community and Technical College-Sheldon, Iowa

The application becomes available in January of each year. Powerline/Lineworker scholarships are one-time only and not renewable. Applicants do not need to reside in a household receiving electric service from an MRES member utility.
* Full-time study is defined as full-time enrollment for the entire academic year.

The purpose of the Nancy Van Bruggen Memorial Scholarship is to remember the life of Nancy Van Bruggen. This scholarship was created by Nancy’s husband, Art, who was an alumnus of NCC.  He hopes this scholarship enables future nursing students to lead with the same type of selflessness and compassion that Nancy had, which she demonstrated endlessly with the care of their son, Aaron, who was born with significant birth defects.

As a commitment to the Everyone Knows Someone Who Chose NCC campaign, Jan and Tom Snyder have created an endowment to fund the NCC/Iowa Regents Scholarship annually in perpetuity. This scholarship is to encourage students to use NCC as a bridge to continue their bachelor's degrees at Iowa State University, University of Iowa, or University of Northern Iowa. The Snyders have spent the majority of their careers in the public sector. Jan Snyder, Ph.D., was a longtime administrator at NCC, retiring as the Vice-President of Institutional Advancement & External Affairs in 2018. Tom Snyder, P.E., served as the County Engineer in Ringgold, Osceola, and O'Brien counties retiring in 2018. Jan and Tom, along with their children Sara and Eric and their spouses, and several extended family members have multiple degrees from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Their experiences through the Regents institutions have served them well personally and professionally. The scholarship will be used for tuition to an area high school graduate or an NCC student who meets the following criteria. The first $1,000 will be awarded to benefit the student during their enrollment at NCC and the remaining $1,000 will be sent directly to the Regent University of choice by the NCC Foundation at the time of transfer. Or in special cases, the total award may be sent to the Regents institution at the appropriate time. Presidents Scholarship recipients are excluded from consideration.

The purpose of the SkillsUSA Scholarship is to recognize the achievements of students who have experienced success at the National or State SkillsUSA competition. The SkillsUSA Scholarship will be awarded to high school graduates who have participated in a competition at the state level and received a gold, silver or bronze medal. Students must send a copy of their certificate with the scholarship application. In the case where a student has received multiple awards throughout his/her high school career, total scholarship will not exceed $1,500. High school students are not eligible for this award if they are dual enrolled in JA or PSEO classes. They will be eligible for this scholarship if they choose to attend NCC as a full-time student in the fall or spring semester after graduation from high school.





Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation Scholarships

Students pursuing careers in machining technology and manufacturing technology will have scholarships available through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation. A 1983 NCC Powerline graduate established this scholarship and believes in paying it forward. Applicants must also submit a letter of reference as part of the scholarship application. The Duane and Georgia Wahlstrom Scholarship

The Duane and Georgia Wahlstrom Scholarship was established to pay tribute to two very loyal supporters of Northwest Iowa Community College, and the Sheldon Community as a whole.  Duane Wahlstrom was an Agricultural instructor at NCC (then NIVS) for many years and was mayor of Sheldon for eight years. Georgia, his loving wife, was also very involved in many events in Sheldon and did whatever she could to support NCC.  Both Duane and Georgia believed in the power of education, and believed that living in Northwest Iowa, especially Sheldon, is a great place to raise a family.

The purpose of the Thunder Scholarship is to encourage students to pursue the Associate of Arts program at Northwest Iowa Community College. Associate of Arts students are not eligible for the Future Ready Iowa Last Dollar Scholarship. The NCC Foundation created this opportunity to fill this gap in financial assistance for students pursuing this program.  Proceeds will be split equally between fall and spring semesters.  Scholarship proceeds will be utilized for tuition, fees, and books. International students (non-citizens) are eligible to apply. Prior recipients may apply for a second-year of funding, but selection is not guaranteed.

TRIO Student Support Services Grant Aid

Applicants must be an active participant in the TRIO Student Support Services program, receive a Pell grant, obtain good academic standing (as determined by cumulative GPA), be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits (preference or priority will be given to full-time students), attend at least two TRIO sponsored events during the academic year, participate in one community service project during academic year and submit the TRIO essay as part of the scholarship application.

Troy Swancutt Powerline Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Troy Swancutt. Troy attended the NCC Powerline program in 1989 and climbed the ladder in the Powerline field over the years to eventually become Director of Operations at People's Energy Cooperative in Rochester, MN. In September of 2020, his successful career was cut short at the age of 59 by a major heart attack.  He was proud of his career and the base that NCC gave him to move up in his field. The United Fund Lucile Woods Tuition Scholarship was created to recognize Lucile Woods' contribution to the United Fund and the Sheldon community during the past years. This recognition will assist the youth of the Sheldon Community School District in pursuit of post-secondary education. Applicants must reside in the Sheldon Community School District, be enrolled in their Senior year of high school at a public or private high school in the NCC service territory, achieve and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit the personal statement as part of the scholarship application. Scholarship proceeds will be split between two semesters and applied to tuition, fees or books.

Vander Haag's, Inc. Diesel Technology Scholarship

The Vander Haag’s, Inc. Diesel Scholarships were established to encourage and assist students to become truck and diesel technicians.  Vander Haag’s, Inc. was founded in 1939 in Sanborn, IA, and operates truck and parts sales/repair facilities in nine locations around the Midwest.  Over the past 80 years, Vander Haag’s has grown into the North American leader in quality recycled truck parts and proudly supports students with an interest in the diesel technology industry.  Applicants must be accepted or enrolled in the Diesel Technology program, by in good academic standing during the duration of the scholarship and submit a letter of reference as part of the scholarship application. Proceeds will be split between the fall and spring semester and will be utilized for tuition, fees and books.

Jamison Van't Hul is an alum of NCC's Industrial Instrumentation & Control program. Since his graduation in 2013, Jamison has experienced a successful career in the Instrumentation field.  Jamison established this scholarship to recognize the hard work of his parents and to emphasize that a four-year degree is not required to be successful. Applicants must be accepted into the Industrial Instrumentation & Control or Electrical Technology program and must submit the personal statement and Van't Hul short answer question as part of the scholarship application. Vern & Peggy Schoeneman Childcare Endowed Scholarship

The Vern & Peggy Schoeneman Childcare Endowed Scholarship was created to support students accepted or enrolled at NCC who rely on quality childcare to support their success as a student. This scholarship has been established by Vern and Peggy Schoeneman. Vern was a senior level administrator at NCC from 1969 to 2003. Peggy Schoeneman was a preschool teacher at Children's World in Sheldon from 1982 to 2003. Applicants must achieve and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and submit an essay as part of the scholarship application. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a first or second year student enrolled in any program of study and may be awarded to the same student for two consecutive years. Scholarship proceeds will be made payable to a registered daycare at the beginning of each semester the award is received.

The Vollink Trades Scholarship recognizes the instructional accomplishments of Ron Vollink, Carpentry Instructor from 1987 to 1998. Since that time, Ron's family members have graduated from various NCC programs and have established successful businesses and careers. This scholarship has evolved to encourage excellence in the diesel/trucking industry. Applicants must be enrolled or accepted into the Diesel Technology program, achieve and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA, reside in the NCC Service Territory and submit a letter of reference as part of the scholarship application. Proceeds will be used for tuition and will be split between two semesters.

Web & Graphic Design Software Scholarship

1 - $240 scholarship granted. Full or part-time students. 
The Web & Graphic Design Software Scholarship was established in 2019 by faculty members that share a passion for the arts. The Web & Graphic Design program at NCC allows students with an artistic ability to combine these skills with the latest technological applications and launch their career in the virtual world of web design and digital graphics. Students are required to purchase Adobe Software to complete the program courses. This software is an additional expense on top of tuition, fees and books, and can hinder students from enrolling or continuing in the program. This scholarship was established to cover the required Adobe Software fees for the duration of the student's first year, therefore making the program more affordable for the recipient and increasing the likelihood they complete the program. Adobe Software fees are subject to change annually, therefore affecting the scholarship amount. 
All eligible applicants will be reviewed after July 1. 





Wesley and Rita Freml Memorial Scholarship

The Wesley and Rita Freml Memorial Scholarship was created in honor of Wesley and Rita Freml. The Freml's raised six boys, all of which became employed by power cooperatives throughout the state of Iowa. Applicants must be a registered student in good standing in their first year of the Powerline program at NCC.  Proceeds can be used for tuition, fees, and books and will be applied to the recipients next semester's bill. Preference will be given to students who originate from Iowa.

Whorley Heidman Law Firm PLLC, a Sheldon law firm, has been in business since 1935. This scholarship was established to recognize the sacrifices of our Armed Forces veterans.  Applicants must be a veteran or retiree of the US Air Force, US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps or US Coast Guard, having completed active duty with an honorable discharge, be an active member of the reserves from any branch of the armed services listed above or be an active member of a state national guard unit. Applicants must also maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit a narrative summarizing their military experience. Proceeds will be split equally between two semesters of study and may be used for tuition, fees, and books. Preference in selection will be given to a resident of the College district.

William G. Giddings served as president of NCC from 2005 through 2011. During his tenure as president, the College experienced substantial enrollment growth. The purpose of the William G. Giddings Scholarship for Leaders is to recognize students who possess the qualities that will prepare them for leadership roles today and into the future. Applicants must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit both the personal statement and leadership short answer questions as part of the scholarship application. Scholarship proceeds will be utilized for tuition, fees, and/or books and applied to the spring semester following the application process.

Ziegler AAS Degree Scholarship

The Ziegler AAS Degree Scholarship was established to encourage and assist students to become diesel technicians. With locations in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Missouri, Ziegler is one of the largest Cat dealers in North America. Ziegler sells and services Cat construction, paving, forestry, and mining equipment, as well as Cat trucks, generators, and industrial engines. In the agricultural market, Ziegler represents Challenger, AGCO application, and Lexion.
